Rhaetian Railway and UNESCO World Heritage

At the heart of the UNESCO world heritage site are the Albula and Bernina railway lines. They both offer fantastic experiences for the tourist.

The Albula line takes passengers from Thusis via Albula to St. Moritz. Before Filisur, trains cross the most famous viaduct: the 65-metre-high and 136-metre-long, semi-circular viaduct leads directly into the tunnel in the vertical cliff face. It's worth getting out at Bergün station, where you will find the railway museum, the venerable Art Nouveau-style Bergün sanatorium and the beautiful church, the venue for regular concerts.

The Bernina line, which is ingeniously routed through the mountains of St. Moritz, crosses the Bernina Pass on its way to Tirano. Today, the Bernina line is globally unique: it is the highest trans-alpine railway and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. The highest station is called "Ospizio Bernina" and is located at 2,253 metres above sea-level. The next station, "Alp Grüm", is known for its beautiful walks. In Brusio you can experience the circular viaduct, another unique architectural work of art. At the end of the line, in Tirano at 429 metres above sea level, a visit to the Palazzo Salis is guaranteed to be rewarding.
